Here's a demo site I recently created during some down-time. It uses transparency to allow the background image to show through and provide atmosphere, and gives a tone on tone effect in the content area that is pleasing to the eye.  Ideally site graphics should contribute to (and not distract from) a fuller experience of the business or endeavor that the site is presenting.

In this template, other backgrounds could be used and in fact I had a lot of fun experimenting with dark, grungy backgrounds, artsy backgrounds and photo-based backgrounds.  My experimentation showed that this template could be adapted in a lot of different ways with unique results each time.
